BYS Soloists
REBECCA SMITH
Leader – Senior Orchestra

Born in 1986, Rebecca attends Wimbledon High School.  She is a student of Julie Staples and has been a loyal member of BYS since 1994.  She was appointed leader of the senior orchestra in September 1999.

HANNAH TOTTENHAM
Violin

Born in 1989, Hannah is currently a pupil at Thomas’s Prep School in Clapham.  She is a student of Julie Staples and has been a committed member of BYS since the age of seven.  In September Hannah will be attending Alleyn’s School where she has been awarded a music exhibition.

VASKO VASSILEV
Concert Master of the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House
Born in Sofia, he trained in Moscow and achieved early international success in the Jacques Thibaud, Carl Flesch and Paganini competitions.  He joined the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House in 1991 as its youngest leader and first Concert Master.  His solo career spans Europe, the Far East and America; in 1998 he toured Europe with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House as soloist in concertos by Tchaikovsky and Mendelssohn.  He has recorded solo and chamber music for Trittico Classics, Harmonia Mundi and Erato, including Brahms’s violin sonatas and Adams’s Violin Concerto.  He is Artistic Director of the Soloists of the Royal Opera House Orchestra and the string ensemble Laureate, which recently recorded the ‘Devil’s Trill’ Sonata and The Original Four Seasons with Vanessa-Mae. 
DAVID THOMAS
Oboe

He studied with Terence MacDonagh at the Royal College of Music and with David Theodore.  After his studies he became Assistant Principal Oboe with the Halle Orchestra.  After sixteen months he joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra as Co-Principal Oboe then became Principal Oboe.  He is currently in his thirteenth season as Principal Oboe with the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.  As a guest he has appeared with the leading orchestras in London and he regularly appears with chamber groups and as a soloist.  He is a founder member of the Bacchus Trio.

ANDREA de FLAMMINEIS
Bassoon

Born in Milan, he studied at the Conservatorio di Musica "G Verdi", Milan and the Hochschule fur Musik, Stuttgart.  From 1987-91 he was a member of the European Community Youth Orchestra and was appointed Principal Bassoon of the Orchestra della Toscana, Florence in 1992.  During his time in Italy he performed the Weber and Mozart Bassoon Concertos with the RAI Symphony Orchestra of Milan and the Mozart Sinfonia Concertante with the Orchestra da Camera di Padovae del Veneto.  Andrea joined the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House as Principal Bassoon in 1993.  Whilst maintaining this position Andrea frequently appears as guest principal bassoon with the London Symphony Orchestra, the BBC Symphony Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra.

ANDREW STAPLES
Founder Director of Battersea Young Strings
Conductor – Intermediate Orchestra

Andrew studied at the Royal Northern College of Music and the Banff Centre for Fine Arts, Canada.  In 1989 he was appointed as sub-principal viola in the Orchestra of the Royal Opera House.  He is also a member of the Soloists of the Royal Opera House Orchestra.

JULIE STAPLES

Director –Senior Orchestra

Julie studied at the Royal College of Music.  She now combines a busy teaching career with caring for their two children, Samuel,3, and Louisa Rose, 3 months. 

ANN STAPLES
Conductor – Junior Orchestra

Ann has over thirty years experience of teaching and conducting children’s orchestras.  After working as a head-teacher of a primary school in Bath, Ann has taken early retirement allowing her more time to spend with her two grandchildren.
